Understanding the IPC Classification Code
The IPC Classification Code (Code), inter alia, mandates the development of evidence based systems of classification. In June 2009, the IPC GB approved, upon recommendation of the IPC Classification Committee and the IPC Sports Science Committee, a Position Statement “Background and scientific rationale for Classification in Paralympic Sport”, which provides a scientific background for classification in Paralympic sport; defines evidence-based classification; and provides guidelines for how evidence-based classification may be achieved. The position statement, written for the purpose of publication in a scientific journal, will support the IPC when enforcing the implementation of the Code by its Membership as it gives scientific value to the rules and regulations (i.e. Code) put in place.
The IPC has adopted this publication as an official IPC Position Statement (IPC Handbook, Section 2, Chapter 4.4)
