IPC Introduction To Para Sports
_________
Classification in the Paralympic movement
History of classification
Classification ensures a fair and level playing field for all competitors.
Classification is not necessarily found only in Paralympic sport. Some forms of classification are also found in able-bodied sports. For example, weight classes in boxing and judo ensure that athletes of similar stature are pitched against one another.
Also gender and age are examples of 'classification'. Except in a few sports, male athletes are not allowed to compete against female competitors. For similar reasons, age groups (so-called 'master classes') have been introduced for, e.g., veteran competitions.
